[AR Upcoming] Arturo Vargas -Why the 2020 Census Matters

Re: Alternative Radio: 2020 Census

How important is the 2020 census? Very. Its repercussions are profound. It’s about power and money. In theory the census should be neutral, an objective collection of data. But like almost everything else these days it is politically charged. The numbers determine representation in Congress and allocation of federal funds. The Census Bureau is part of the Department of Commerce. Every ten years it is mandated by the Constitution, to count, “enumerate” is the exact word, the country’s population. In the 2020 census the Trump administration has added a question about citizenship. A concern is that the addition of such a question will discourage immigrants from filling out the form. The Constitution says nothing about a distinction between citizens and non-citizens. A court case in New York will soon rule on this critical issue.

Arturo Vargas is a nationally recognized expert in Latino demographic trends, electoral participation, voting rights, redistricting and the Census. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of NALEO, a national membership organization of Latino policymakers and their supporters. He has held various positions at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and he was the senior education policy analyst at the National Council of La Raza in Washington, D.C.

The Drop

promo packshot
Artist: The Drop
Title: Takeover (Dubmatix Version)
Label: Shoal Records
Release Date: Dec 12 2018

Dubmatix once again delivers an epic production with this remix of ‘Takeover’, taken from The Drop’s debut album ‘Last Stand’. The Canadian composer, producer, multi- instrumentalist and seven-time JUNO Award winner and nominee hails from Toronto but has carved out a massive following on the international stage. He is a recording machine, from his debut release Champion Sound Clash in 2004, the Toronto-born Dubmatix has gone on to produce and record over 500 releases (Albums, EPs, Dubs, Remixes).

Teaming up with The Drop on this track he creates a superb heavyweight banger, with a phat rolling bassline and his signature, creative percussion work adding to the groove. Keeping all the lyrical content from the original vocal by The Drop’s singer Dandelion, the strong political message stays intact.

Described as ‘UK Reggae at its best’, The Drop’s contemporary take on Jamaican Roots music has been accepted and acclaimed across the board. National radio support from David Rodigan (BBC Radio 1Xtra), Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music), Lauren Laverne (BBC 6 Music), Gilles Peterson (World Wide FM), Becca Duddley (Beats 1), Huw Stevens (BBC 6 Music), and online support from Clash, Bandcamp, Irie Mag, Reggaeville, United Reggae and UK Bass Music to name a few.

Dubmatix thoughts
Nicolai approached me about being part of his annual King Size Dub release and I was hooked. The idea behind this particular release is to share some of the remixes, dubs and alternate versions I use for touring along with a few new dub tracks. Nicolai had the idea of creating a "party playlist" so with that in mind - we set about selecting 20 cuts that you could play from start to finish - including those always funtastic "laser" drops between tracks. Some you've heard before, some will be new but we hope you enjoy the release and find something that gets you bumpin.

RELEASE INFO
The release of King Size Dub – special - DUBMATIX - is another impressive display of how a musical style has progressed. Dub as a style with all its reference points between commerce and innovation. Canada is the place where the genre’s busiest, most talented and possibly cleverest producer hails from: Dubmatix.

Not only a studio virtuoso, but also an incredibly profound artist and perfectionist whose sure-fire instinct for the ultimate groove productions defines the current state of the art in the genre.

With his debut album Champion Soundclash in 2005, and a total of 8 albums and a mind-blowing number of digital releases and remixes, Jesse King aka Dubmatix has conquered the world of dub and reggae. In everything he does he reveals a fine instinct for intricate and supremely skillful compositions full of unexpected twists and turns. Dubmatix has the power to surprise, not by using volume or of-the-moment sounds, but through clever, occasionally low-key but always absolutely compelling skills.

20 (+ 2 bonus) pounding dubs merge seamlessly into each other. All are ideal for bringing the dancefloors of the dub universe to a boiling point. Heavy bass for heavy dancing!
